As students head back to school, parents often focus on school supplies, schedules, and new clothes—but one important item is often overlooked: the backpack.
Every year, chiropractors see children and teenagers with neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, and back pain that can often be traced back to carrying backpacks that are too heavy or worn incorrectly.
At Midtown Chiropractic Clinic, our mission is simple: Keep Raleigh Moving—starting with our youngest patients.
How Heavy Is Too Heavy?
A child’s backpack should weigh no more than 10–15% of their body weight.
For example:
- 50-pound child → backpack should weigh no more than 5–7.5 pounds
- 80-pound child → backpack should weigh no more than 8–12 pounds
- 120-pound child → backpack should weigh no more than 12–18 pounds
If your child has to lean forward while walking, struggles to lift the backpack, or complains of pain after school, it’s likely too heavy.
Signs a Backpack Is Causing Problems
Watch for these warning signs:
- Neck pain
- Shoulder pain
- Upper or lower back pain
- Headaches after school
- Tingling or numbness in the arms
- Leaning forward while walking
- One shoulder sitting higher than the other
- Red marks from shoulder straps
These symptoms may seem minor at first but can become ongoing problems if not addressed.
Five Backpack Safety Tips
1. Choose the Right Backpack
Look for:
- Wide, padded shoulder straps
- Padded back
- Multiple compartments
- Adjustable straps
- Waist or chest strap if possible
2. Wear Both Shoulder Straps
Using only one strap causes uneven stress on the spine and muscles.
3. Pack Smart
Place heavier books closest to the back and only carry what is needed for the day.
4. Adjust the Fit
The backpack should sit in the middle of the back—not hanging below the waist.
5. Clean It Out Weekly
Extra papers, water bottles, sports gear, and forgotten supplies add unnecessary weight.
Can Chiropractic Help?
If your child is experiencing neck pain, headaches, or back discomfort during the school year, chiropractic care may help restore normal movement, improve posture, and reduce muscular tension.
At Midtown Chiropractic Clinic, every child receives an age-appropriate examination to determine the cause of their discomfort. Treatment recommendations are always individualized and based on the child’s specific needs.
Healthy Habits Beyond the Backpack
Good posture doesn’t stop when school ends.
Encourage your child to:
- Limit prolonged screen time
- Take movement breaks every 30–45 minutes
- Stay physically active
- Stretch daily
- Get enough sleep
- Maintain good posture while studying
Small habits today can make a big difference in lifelong spinal health.
