OVERVIEW
Chiropractic Care for Vertigo and Dizziness
Vertigo is the unsettling sensation that you or your surroundings are spinning or moving when there is no actual movement. It can range from a brief, mild dizzy spell to a severe and debilitating experience that makes it impossible to stand, walk, or function normally. Vertigo is a symptom, not a diagnosis — and identifying its underlying cause is essential for effective treatment.
At Midtown Chiropractic Clinic in Raleigh, we are experienced in evaluating and treating some of the most common causes of vertigo — particularly those related to the inner ear and the cervical spine — offering a safe, natural alternative to medication-based management.

What Causes Vertigo?
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) — The most common cause of vertigo. BPPV occurs when tiny calcium crystals in the inner ear (otoconia) become dislodged and move into the semicircular canals, disrupting balance signals sent to the brain. Episodes are typically triggered by specific head movements.
Cervicogenic Vertigo — Dizziness and balance disturbances that arise from dysfunction in the cervical spine — particularly the upper cervical joints — which send proprioceptive signals to the brain. Chiropractic care can be highly effective for this type.
Other Contributing Factors — Inner ear infections, Meniere’s disease, vestibular neuritis, migraines, and medication side effects can also cause vertigo. We work collaboratively with other providers when needed.

How We Treat Vertigo
Canalith Repositioning (Epley Maneuver) — For BPPV, the Epley maneuver is a highly effective technique performed in-office that guides the displaced crystals back to their proper position in the inner ear, often resolving symptoms within one to three sessions.
Upper Cervical Chiropractic Adjustments — Misalignments in the upper cervical spine — particularly the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) — can disrupt balance and proprioception. Gentle adjustments to these segments often produce rapid improvement in cervicogenic vertigo.
Vestibular Rehabilitation Exercises — We guide patients through specific exercises designed to retrain the brain’s ability to process balance information correctly, reducing dizziness and improving stability over time.
